Playing by the Rules
I consider Walker Johnson a friend, but his column last week in the Halls News was, in my opinion, way off the mark. It had to do with my blog a few weeks ago regarding how I felt a WATE reporter had been treated unfairly by the Sheriff's office's public information officer.
In his column, he takes us to task for "not playing by the rules" and "moaning" about how we were treated. Below is my response to Walker's column.
Walker, about the only thing I agree with you concerning this week's column about the debate with Martha Dooley on my blog is the fact that, it is indeed hard to find.
I know that you and Martha are close friends so I assume you were simply defending her honor.
A few examples of disagreement:
" If you are a news reporter you best play nice with your sources or they can dry up on you faster than a lawyer's smile."
Martha's not a source, she's the sheriff's public information officer. It's her job to work with us. We don't have to like each other, but it does help if there's at least a sense of mutual respect. The incident I wrote about on my blog was really about respect or lack of it. Our reporter was totally disrespected by the Sheriff's office and I felt it required attention.
"They, on the other hand, are just doing their job and if they are gracious enough to give you their rules, it is up to you to play by them."
We do play by the rules. We work very hard to make sure our stories are accurate and relevent. sometimes we step on toes along the way, but we never violate our ethical boundaries. From the tone of your column, reporters are just lap dogs who should be happy when they're occassionally thrown a bone. Give me a break.
All we ask is that PIO's do their jobs in a timely and fair manner, not hand out information and interviews as if they were some reward for good behavior. We prefer to work "with" people, but we're not above working independently We need information on a timely basis..
As for your assertion that we violated some rule? What rule did we violate? Martha discouraged us from talking to Officer Johnson. That's not a rule, that was her opinion, and that's not her decision to make. It's the officers opinion that counts.
Our reporter visited his home and he and his family graciously invited us into their home. They even videotaped us inrterviewing the officer. They were very happy to see us. If they had asked us to leave, we would've left.
So who's moaning.. certainly not me. I simply called someone out who deserved it for the shabby treatment she gave one of our reporters.. I would think you'd do the same thing in my position.
And the next time you trash something I've written, at least have the decency to call me and get my side of it. You and I have always gotten along and I'm frankly surprised that you would rip me without at least giving me a chance to respond.
Walker, that's not playing by the rules....

Lots of problems with the
Lots of problems with the above and not enough time to get into them now.
The deal on not calling was a time thing, I was headed out of the country and had to write early. I don't call folks on a Sunday night at home about something they published on their blog.
I have offered to run the above this week in my column but after tons of e mails between Gene and myself he said to forget it.
The part about defining Martha's job was a little thin. Her job also includes following policy of the department and knowing what information is needed for public comsumption and what is to be held. There can be an entire laundry list of reasons for holding information, one of which could be up coming litigation.
It certainly isn't her job or the departments job to explain why they are not answering questions.
As for reporters getting pushed around, sorry, it is not an easy career path, good to see you took up for your reporter but where was your news director or manager?
One thing we have to agree on is that this old horse is now ready for the glue factory and we need to stop with the whip marks.
Walker Johnson
Wow, I just read Walker
Wow, I just read Walker Johnson's column online and came to WATE's website to see what this blog controversy is all about.
First, I was SHOCKED to see that it was one of the chief anchors who kept this blog. WOW... How is this blog ethical? Anchors blogging about sources, stories, politics, etc???? We should NEVER hear an anchors OPINION on any issue!! How can you have the respect of the community as a news gatherer/reporter if you show your bias on a blog? I mean, the public isn't stupid, we know that anchors have opinions, but we trust that they are fairly presenting the issue, but how CAN we trust you when you put your opinions out on the web for all to see? The next time I hear something about the sheriff's department on WATE, I will wonder if it's a fair description of what is really going on.
Second, Walker Johnson has to call you after reading your blog and speaking to the sheriff department's employee? I think not. Your blog was enough for him because unlike you, he is a columnist. He prints radio/tv gossip, history, ratings, and employee turnover. Readers know when they read his column that he's giving opinions. Plus, his article barely gave any information at all, just pointed people in the direction of this blog.
I think that the news director should seriously consider pulling the plug on this blog as well as the man who shouts at cars as he tracks their speed with his radar gun. Both of these highly diminish WATE's credibility as a serious news station.
I really don't know what's worse, that WATE has a blog written by a news anchor or that the news anchor bad-mouthed someone in his blog. All I can say is WOW...
Hey CONCERNED VIEWER,
Hey CONCERNED VIEWER, anchors without opinions off the air? This is 2006 in America, not 1966 in Russia. Why are you reading blogs if you think there should be fewer of them? Maybe you'd prefer 3 TV station news of 1966 instead of convergence. Your views are as modern as a covered wagon.
So Gene, keep blogging away, and Walker, get a friggin clue. Reporters should play nice to sources? HARDLY. If this PIO can't take the pressure, then they should do PR for pablum day care. Besides, they're being paid by my, Gene's and YOUR tax dollars. I don't care about a gov't PIO's feelings. News reporters and shops shouldn't as well.
In the Biz, You need to go
In the Biz,
You need to go back and read your mass comm law book. Look in the chapter on ethics. For an anchor to use his powerful position to sway political feelings or to lash out at someone saying things they wouldn't say on air... that's unethical.
You job is to report the
You job is to report the news!!! No to give your opinion!!! That's for people that have their OWN shows such as Rush or Bill O'Riley. You do not have that kind of stage my friend. You are a anchor on what supposed to be a non bias show? Be eithical and just give us the facts. We don't want to hear your opinion! Opinions are for us to decide...the viewer! So just do your job, quit crying and report the damn news!!!
Man, this is really wild. I
Man, this is really wild. I had no idea folks would actually FIND this blog, heck I can't half the time.
BIG issue, get the WATE webdude to put it on the opening page!!

A public information officer
A public information officer is paid to disseminate the "party line" of whatever entity he or she works for. A reporter's job is to get information in a timely manner. Either working with the PIO or without.
It is not the job of the PIO or that person's employer to determine what is "needed for public consumption" as walker's above post said. That's why we have a free press in this country. The Bush administration has got the national media so whipped that it's filtering down to some John Q's. that the news is whatever those in power say it is. God forbid that should ever be so.
I'm thankful for Gene and 6 for having the guts to "step on toes" when need be.
