News Hits Home

A friend asked me recently if I ever felt bad about the depressing news I read, especially these days.

It seems the news has been very depressing lately. Rising gas and food prices, plant closings and layoffs, natural disasters, the War. Nothing seems particularly positive.

Usually, I'm detached from much of what I report on our newscasts. If you get too invested, you lose objectivity. Not to mention, it could drive you crazy.

But now the bad news has hit home.

My wife was recently laid off from her job. It came as quite a surprise. She thought she was doing a good job. She thought she had job security. She didn't.

The excuse they used to get rid of her was "reallocation of resources." Apparently her minimal salary could be better used elsewhere.

As you can imagine, she's gone through a gamut of emotions - first shock, followed by anger, self-doubt, sadness and now just a bitter emptiness.

I wish I could make it better.

It's tough to get laid off, especially in such a dehumanizing and impersonal way. Work is so much more than just swapping our labor for money. It's all those relationships we develope at work. It's the years of our lives that we pour into a firm. It's part of our identity. Work is huge.

Simply put ----> Job loss is traumatic.

But after we work through our grief, there is a good side to all of this. It does open us up to discovering other opportunities and adventures. There is a whole world out there waiting for us.

Godspeed on your new journey Mrs. Patterson.
