Fulmer Says Thanks But No Thanks

Oops.

That's the real headline for the latest news coming out of the UT President's office regarding former head football coach Phillip Fulmer.

After several days of criticism over the hiring of Fulmer as a "special assistant to the UT President," Fulmer now says he doesn't want the job.

UT President John Petersen and Fulmer have been under fire for the deal that would've paid the former UT football coach, $12,500 a month through February to help in fund raising for the University.

The fact that the money paid to Fulmer would come from private donors, didn't mitigate the anger many on campus felt.

All they knew was that, while Fulmer was double-dipping (he's also receiving $125,000 a month for the next four years as part of his contract buy-out), they were having to make cuts to programs and positions.

The President's office now says the offer was made to give him time to "consider his future without severing insurance and retirement benefits with the University."

It also says Fulmer was offered an "existing temporary position that had been left unfilled."

Fulmer did the right thing. He turned down the job and offered his services as an "alumni volunteer."
