Have You Checked Your Homeowners Lately?
Don Dare reminds us on an almost weekly basis to read the fine print when entering into any contract. Despite the admonition, he has no trouble finding folks who've run into problems because they didn't.
Add reading the fine print of a homeowners insurance policy to that list and add my name to the list.
Recently I noticed two small stains in the upstairs master bathroom in my home.
I called my insurance agent, who got me in touch with an adjuster, who took a look at my problem. It turned out to be a minor roof leak (if there is such a thing)...and remedied with just a little bit of money.
Good thing because I thought I had a $500 deductible, but I didn't. It turns out my policy changed five years ago. The deductible is now 1 percent of the value of my home, which is a lot more than $500.
My agent tells me it changed because, back in 1998, insurance companies around the state started getting hammered with wind and hail claims. Apparently it was a bad year for storms that year.
To mitigate their liability, companies began shifting from the $500 to $1000 deductibles to the 1 percent of your home's value deductibles, to save money.
My agent says all this was contained in several letters I was sent in 2004, when my insurance policy changed.
I, of course, don't remember it, and that's my fault.
We are now in the process of changing my policy, which, of course, will mean a higher premium.
Have you checked your policy lately?

Good advice! I keep meaning
Good advice! I keep meaning to re-read my homeowners policy as well as my healthcare policy. Such a pain. So many pages and it is hard to understand a lot of it. Your advice may just push me to get the job done. Thanks.
