Banned for Super Bowl

Submitted by Gene Patterson on February 3, 2006 - 11:54pm

OK, it's Super Bowl time and everyone's gearing up for the game... Well, not everyone. There is sentiment that many viewers look forward to the commercials more than the game. I'm not sure that's really true, but Madison Avenue certainly pushes that idea.

For sure, the companies advertising during Super Bowl put out some great spots.. They better, commercial time is expensive.

So in the spirit of funny Super Bowl commercials, I've included a link to a spot that you won't see this Sunday... Its very funny.

Memories

Submitted by Gene Patterson on February 7, 2006 - 2:43am

If you're like me, you've played your share of video games.

Here's something that'll bring back memories.

Bruce Pearl

Submitted by Gene Patterson on March 13, 2006 - 10:20pm

I loved the picture of Coach Bruce Pearl in today's Knoxville News Sentinel. It was a perfect expression of total, absolute disbelief, surrounded by his players, who were in absolute, total joy.

In living rooms across East Tennessee and the Vol Nation, shock was followed cheers and high fives. I watched the bracket show with my dog Fred. Even he was surprised at the high seed. How in the world did Tennessee get a number two seed in the NCAA basketball tournament? Wow!

Tennessee basketball has come a long way in a short time.

Who Are These People?

Submitted by Gene Patterson on March 28, 2006 - 10:27pm

1975The saying about never judging a book by its cover could never be more evident than this picture.

The year is 1978. Can you guess who these people are?

Masters Week

Submitted by Gene Patterson on April 5, 2006 - 1:53am

I'm taking a few days off. I'm traveling with three friends to St Simons Island, Georgia. One of the guys in the group has a condo there so the stay is free. We spend four days playing golf in mornings and watching the Masters in the afternoon on tv. It's a great time to decompress, play my favorite sport and eat seafood. I look forward to the trip each year.

You might wonder why we would spend our afternoons watching a golf tournament on tv? Many people consider watching golf akin to watching paint dry. Lots of tournaments are exactly that, but the Masters is special.

Can This Be True?

Submitted by Gene Patterson on May 17, 2006 - 1:43am

"... For the week of the broadcast network upfront presentations, Bolt Media hopes this stat delivers a bullet to TV: Only one in four 12- to 34-year-olds can name all four major broadcast networks: ABC, NBC, CBS and Fox. Teens may not be able to name the big four, but they know MTV, Cartoon Network and Comedy Central...."

Can this be true? Only one in four can name the major networks?

It's no secret that broadcast television has been losing viewers over the years, but it appears rather than a slow leak, the losses are now at flood stage.

Ann Coulter

Submitted by Gene Patterson on June 8, 2006 - 11:50pm

So how do you produce a bestseller? Well it helps if you're physically attractive, not afraid of controversy and completely and totally insensitive.

And it appears bestselling author Ann Coulter has all that down to a science (ok, maybe not the attractive part, but she is striking in that tall blonde kind of way).

What Bugs You About TV News?

Submitted by Gene Patterson on June 16, 2006 - 8:39pm

At the risk of being personally skewered, I offer the question: What bugs you most about local TV news ( please no personal attacks) ? It's no secret that local viewing is sliding, but why?

There was a time and not too long ago, when local news easily dominated the ratings. If it was 6PM you could bet the majority of TV sets would be tuned to a local news program.

Local news still commands a good number of viewers, but in a rapidly decreasing rate.

Is it because there are so many other options? Cable TV? The internet?

Or is it a lifestyle issue?

What I learned on my Summer Vacation

Submitted by Gene Patterson on June 27, 2006 - 12:33am

Well, I'm back from a week at the beach. It was a great time to unwind and enjoy the sunshine and seafood of the Carolina coast.

On our vacations, my wife and I usually spend a lot of time golfing, playing tennis, bicycling and being generally pretty active. But not this year, at least not for me.

On Monday, two days into our trip, I stepped on a tennis ball and badly sprained my ankle. It was the most excruciating pain I've felt in a long time. It hurt so bad, I almost passed out.

It's Still a Crime

Submitted by Gene Patterson on July 28, 2006 - 1:00am

This is a bit off topic for me, but it dawned on me tonight as I was listening to Peyton Manning speak at the Knoxville Sports Hall of Fame dinner, that I was still mad that he didn't win the Heisman trophy in 1997.
I had the good fortune of meeting Peyton right after his senior year at UT. It was brief a handshake and a how do you do. So everything I know about the guy, I've heard from others or read. And everything I've heard and read suggests that sports writers were dead wrong when they awarded college football's highest honor to Michigan's Charles Woodson in 1997.

Racism

Submitted by Gene Patterson on December 5, 2006 - 9:56pm

An article in the perspective section of the Knoxville News Sentinel Sunday suggests that we all have latent racist attitudes.
The article by Michael Shermer, publisher of Skeptic magazine, points to a Harvard test as proof. Shermer describes it this way:
"The insidiousness of racism is because of the fact that it arises out of the deep recesses of our unconscious. We may be unaware of it, yet it lurks there."

Cable Blues

Submitted by Gene Patterson on February 13, 2007 - 10:04pm

Over the last few months, I've had a number of disruptions at home with my cable tv signal (specifically HD) and with my high speed internet service too.

I've called our provider several times to complain, but usually hang up before actually getting through to a "human."

I love the "due to an unusually high volume of calls...it may take a while to get to you today" recording I get every time I call.

Valentine's Day

Submitted by Gene Patterson on February 13, 2007 - 10:31pm

Valentine's Day is a big deal at the Patterson home, probably yours too. One reason it's
so important is that - a number of years ago - my wife and I thought it would be a good idea to get married on February 14.

And so we did.

A number of my male friends now give me grief over the decision. It does seem a bit overly romantic. Especially for someone like me, who's not exactly Mr. Hearts and Flowers.

Still, while I might question the date, after 15 years, I'm very happy Mrs. Patterson is still Mrs.

Get Human

Submitted by Gene Patterson on February 28, 2007 - 9:29pm

A while back I complained about contacting a local cable company with a problem and having to deal with an insane amount of recorded questions.

A number of you responded to the post with ways to avoid the dreaded recordings. But now, thanks to Mike Cohen, I have a list of phone numbers and methods to get to a human almost immediately for hundreds of companies.

Check it out here.

Thanks Mike.

News Hits Home

Submitted by Gene Patterson on July 1, 2008 - 8:38pm

A friend asked me recently if I ever felt bad about the depressing news I read, especially these days.

It seems the news has been very depressing lately. Rising gas and food prices, plant closings and layoffs, natural disasters, the War. Nothing seems particularly positive.

Usually, I'm detached from much of what I report on our newscasts. If you get too invested, you lose objectivity. Not to mention, it could drive you crazy.

But now the bad news has hit home.

My wife was recently laid off from her job. It came as quite a surprise. She thought she was doing a good job.

A Shooting What?

Submitted by Gene Patterson on July 4, 2008 - 2:26am

Late at night, I often sit on my back deck with my dog Fred enjoying the quiet of the evening.

After a long day in the newsroom, it's a nice way to decompress.

The other night, the sky was particularly clear and the stars were very bright. That's when I saw it, a shooting star. It erupted in flames, a big ball of fire, trailing across the sky.

It was only visible for a few seconds before flaming out.

Have You Checked Your Homeowners Lately?

Submitted by Gene Patterson on January 22, 2009 - 10:16pm

Don Dare reminds us on an almost weekly basis to read the fine print when entering into any contract. Despite the admonition, he has no trouble finding folks who've run into problems because they didn't.
Add reading the fine print of a homeowners insurance policy to that list and add my name to the list.
Recently I noticed two small stains in the upstairs master bathroom in my home.

Runner's High

Submitted by Gene Patterson on March 30, 2009 - 11:37pm

Congratulations to everyone who competed in this weekend's Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon, Half Marathon and 5K.   Yours truly, trudged around the 5K course more than a minute "slower" than last year.

WATE's Running Crew, however, was well represented finishing second in the Team Competition.

For the record our team this weekend was: Don Dare, Kristin Farley, Matt Hinkin, Jill McNeal, Prentice Elliott, Brian Englestad, Angie Froemel, Dan Froemel, Doug Patterson, Blair Patterson and Patty Weaver.
